FIFTH AVENUE LOBBY

Facade
alterations and interior renovation to a commercial lobby at a prime midtown
fifth avenue address. Investigation revealed that the low-ceilinged lobby
and entrance had originally been much higher. Removing dropped ceilings
exposed taller spaces and original moldings but also exposed sprinkler
pipes. So a system of suspended translucent panels with curved aluminum
fins was devised to obscure the pipes while leaving the moldings visible.

On the exterior, the diminutive entrance opening was enlarged to match the proportions of the contiguous storefronts. An airfoil shaped canopy contains recessed lighting and supports the perforated stainless steel “677.” The renovated elevator cabs include ceilings of fiberoptic pinpoint lights protruding through copper mesh.
